"Broadening the At War roster's sonic palate further, Portland, Oregon's Fellwoods give us a slab of bluesey, hard-edged rock with a great vintage 70s sound. I'm loathe to do so, but I'm sure these guys (formerly The Moss) will be lumped in with the current "retro-rock" revival, which includes some great bands, and some questionable bandwagon-jumpers. The major differentiator for me is the ability to just write a GOOD TUNE-unconsciously and without pretence-and Fellwoods most definitely do that! It's very stripped-down, direct and raw blues rock which gives a heavy nod to the proto metal of the self-titled Bang LP, the first Sir Lord Baltimore record and even early Judas Priest (Rocka Rolla is an absolutely minsunderstood classic in my opinion). The vocals aren't a million miles away from Halford early caterwaul either and fit with the sense of kinetic urgency throughout. There are some fantastic psychedelic spacey passages going on too,refelected in the beautfiful cover art by vocalist/guitarist Adam Burke."

Absolutely chuffed to be putting this out after talking about it for literally years. FRU is one of the absolute best drone bands not just in the UK but on the planet and over the past few years I've seen Fraser (and then Fraser and Grant) play some of the most dense, suffocatingly heavy drone noise time and time again that has only been surpassed by the untouchable Culver. Lee Stokoe's work is a good basis for comparison if you're a FRU virgin and they tread similar sound-in-a-vaccum stasis and churning, crunching, collapsing-building noise as Gateshead's finest. This band is a major force in its own right though and there's a real foreboding horror movie atmosphere going on here.

After some early releases on EEE Recordings, followed by the split album 'Equinox' on Hypnotic Dirge Records in 2009, Old Forgotten Lands' much-awaited full-length album 'Primal' finally sees the light of day. Whereas the older material was more synth-based ambient, the new material shows a nice progression from musician Elan O'Neal, and has a much more natural and organic feeling. Making use of various unique instruments such as a Tibetan singing bowl, a tambourine, wooden flute, violin, timpani, maracas, among others, as well as the use of field recordings, acoustic guitar, synth, and minimum vocals, when all is said and done, this is an ambitious and well-executed album spanning almost an hour in length. Primal also features guest appearances from some prolific special guests. Overall, this is a fantastic and diverse album which shows incredible maturity in a genre which can sometimes become repetitive and mundane, and should be definitely be appreciated by all fans of ambient, neo-folk, and experimental music.

Essentially this is grind maniacs TOTAL FUCKING DESTRUCTION playing a great fusion of early 90s-style thrash and classic rock stylings, with the inimitable Megadan Tumelo on vocals. Just check the back cover of the CD: Dan has the HEAVY METAL comic logo tattooed on his arm: nuff said! Anyway: to the music. Old Head's roots are most defiitely in 70s rock; the three covers on this record are testament to that: "Fat Man" by Jethro Tull, a refreshingly non-obvious Sabbath cover in "Rock And Roll Doctor" and my favourite, a thrash re-imagining of CSNY's "Cut My Hair". Maybe it's the sentiment but that song is just a belter! OH have their own style though, and that is brilliant catchy riffs, superb tight-as-fuck drumming (Rich Hoak - you may have heard of him - his day job is to pound the skins in on the of greatest grind bands ever, Brutal Truth), great sing-a-long heavy metal choruses (as they should be!) and superb, really beefy production.

Silent Path is another musical project from Saman Nu, the musician from Tehran, Iran behind the atmospheric Black Metal project, Ekove Efrits. While with Ekove Efrits, Saman creates a rich and textured atmospheric sound which is filled with soaring melodies, doom-laden ambience, and deep melancholy, Silent Path however is a completely different beast altogether. The sound is grittier, darker, and much less optimistic and brings together elements of down-tempo depressive black metal, funeral doom, and ambience. With a strong emphasis on soaring melancholic riffs. This album is a bleak hour-long journey into the depravity that humanity is capable of, and should appeal to all fans of depressive black metal, in particular those who enjoy Exiled From Light, and Ekove Efrits. Just released on UW Records is the new and long awaited split CD between raw black metal legends Ophidian Forest and H?resiarchs of Dis (Haeresiarchs Of Dis), combining early, unreleased, and demo material from each artist. The Dis tracks are taken in part from the original 'Dis' demo, which preceded the debut record 'Overture', in addition to five more tracks which are even earlier still, ranging from very early cassette recordings and ending in a majestically re-tooled incarnation of the 'Overture' track, 'Circle' (given it's original name, Circle of Sodomy, for this release). Picking up where they left off on 2009's 'life failures made music', the Italian three-piece headed by Claudio Alcara (also guitarist of famous black metal band Frostmoon Eclipse) makes their Hypnotic Dirge Records debut with the new album 'sound graveyard bound' Mixing various influences including Tom Waits, and Johnny Cash, Stroszek is certainly not a typical band you'd expect to hear from someone coming from a black metal background. Instead, Stroszek is often described by its frontman as "old music for old people" but could also be described as melancholic acoustic rock with influences from american folk music and (real) country music. However, interlaced among the sombre mood and melancholy, there are also uplifting guitar solos, intricate and powerful guitar work, and a truly relaxing atmosphere. Combining a bleak depression with absolutely beautiful melodies to drift away to, Stroszek is a project to enjoy during moments of introspection and quiet evenings. The album also includes a cover of Mike Johnson's track 'If the world hadn't gone insane' as well as the beautiful female vocals of 'Nat' on the track 'Spirits Dwell.' Absolutely recommended!!

Subterranean Disposition is an experimental death-doom recording project from Terry Vainoras, a veteran of the underground Australian metal scene spanning a career almost two decades in length and also known for his involvement with Cryptic Darkness, The Eternal, and Insomnius Dei. Originally inspired by and conceived as a follow up to the music Mark Kelson had written for his and Terry’s Collaboration on the Insomnius Dei album ‘Illusions of Silence’, the debut self-titled Subterranean Disposition album explores further the use of dissonance and ambience, lending more dynamics to the long passages of darkness and light, crafted from the influence of early 90’s doom metal and modern sludge with forward thinking embellishments in song writing. Also permeating the record are the use of female vocals courtesy of Pheobe Pinnock, and guest saxaphone from D'arcy Molan, both musicians from the Australian scene. Considering all the elements present in the album, you can expect nothing less than an all-encompassing, broading, dark, and experimental ride through devastating darkness on the debut Subterranean Disposition album.

Bleak and secluded sound world, featuring six looming movements of darkly, post-industrial, isolationist ambience in the pure nordic shining coldness.The music Taphephobia makes is mostly based on manipulated guitars (except house of memories that is mostly based on sounds). Taphephobia try to get out the feelings he has at the moment when Ketil compose the music. The idea is to create a atmosphere that is sometimes scary, and sometimes beautiful, like for example a good thriller drama movie. Taphephobia is very skilled to create a cinematic atmosphere combined with personal feelings like fear, hope, hate, regrets etc… The main goal is to make the listener able to dream away with the music.

First full-length album by this Glasgow-based post-goth trio, and one of my absolute favourite At War releases ever! Building on their two-track CDr on Kovorox from a couple of years ago, Vom have come out with a much more attractive proposition than the metal/krautrock hybrid which was going on there; this album is much more focussed, dark and heavy. In fact it's as brooding and dripping with dark atmosphere as anything I've heard released in ages. Like a hybrid of Scream-era Siouxsie And The Banshees, early X-Mal Deustchland and the first Killing Joke LP, with vocals buried deep in the mix and heavily distorted (think Ramleh's early post-PE stage), Vom reference a lot of music yet sound nothing like you've ever heard. Total intensity and they deserve to be huge; hopefully this will be the first step on the jourey. 500 copies, in gatefold mini LP-style sleeves, with art by the excellent Fred Ressler

The Grey Emperor is a real statement of intent, and shows that Wraiths are miles ahead of the rest of the drone pack with an album that is utterly drenched in dark, oppresive atmosphere and gives a genuinely creepy experience to the listener. So often Wraiths' drone kin come out with a "volume over everything else" mantra and what they do so effectively on this release is to build up tension, atmosphere, sheer black MALICE throughout the (one track's!) 60 minute running time. Less is more, and from the repetitive drum beats at the start to the howling crescendo, the constrictive anxiety of the music is never comprimised. You won't find a horn section or guest vocalists here, just total ritualistic drone evil. HAIL! 500 copies, comes in an A3 textured card gatefold wallet with the CD mounted inside, held together with a wax seal (gold, silver or red) and inside a thick A3 PVC wallet. Completely hand-made packaging in every way, which my incredibly burnt fingers will attest to!
